Conditionally connected
The various steps in the process of Self-development follow a fixed sequence in time, with each step being a prerequisite for the next, both in men and in women.
Girls remain within the Lunar sphere of the mother (or other enveloping figure) as long as she keeps identifying with the image that is mirrored back to her. Her Self remains inert until it is being separated by the powerful influence of the Saturnian Self. This separation can take place in her as a puberty process from within, or can be instigated by an outside factor.
This Saturnian Self, in turn, must be kept moving by the mirroring Moon. Without her benign influence, the maturation process will stagnate, giving free reign to evil forces such as the tendency to hang on to traditions and fossilization on the one hand, and isolation and alienation on the other. The Saturnian core is not viable in itself, and in isolation it will eventually wither away and die. The interaction between Saturn and his mirror, the Moon, is an essential factor for development in both men and women.
Breaches
Apart from this Self-developer (the Moon) and Self-supporter (Saturn), there is a third factor at play. For again and again, the old balance must be disturbed and boundaries must be transgressed and/or shifted. This is where Uranus enters the stage. This transgressor plays an important role in the process of detachment from the mother in both boys and girls. In this ferryman function, he works at the backside of Saturn as his hidden retinue (21.1).
However, when Uranus upsets the balance between Moon and Saturn on his own initiative, he can also cause traumas. These can lead to dissociation and eventually even result in the destruction of the Self. Not surprisingly, sexual abuse, especially incestuous experiences, can have a deeply Self-alienating impact. Excommunication, persecution and homelessness can also tear away someone from his roots and severely disturb the Self’s process of growing roots and achieving inner integration.
Collective systems within a religion or society will often act as a substitute for the personal Self. However, this kind of projection carries the risk that such a damaged and weakened Self will lose itself in the collective and also lose its conscience function.
Uranus as icebreaker
Apart from these risks, Uranus does have its own task and place within the process of Self construction. His assignment is not to guard borders, but to transgress them. Through this quality, he cracks open the safe environment of our familiar images and viewpoints. He pushes away curtains and lays bare a field of forces that up till now had been concealed from sight, releasing a stream of impersonal energies in the personal field. This new vitality brings with it the germ of value-free creativity, but initially, it will create more chaos than anything else in the personal sphere.
